Defined as “delightfully charming or attractive,” enchanting can be used to describe a lot of towns in Mississippi. However, none fit the bill quite like Holly Springs. Loaded with history, gorgeous architecture, and other must visit sites, the picturesque little town is perfect for your next day trip. Take a look:
Boasting true southern hospitality and a rich history, Holly Springs is a delightful town in Marshall County with about 8,000 residents.
Don’t let the town’s small size fool you. Holly Springs is practically overflowing with things to do, which is why it’s been dubbed “Mississippi’s best kept secret.”
Dating back to the Civil War, the town is full of stately antebellum homes, most of which are available for tours during the Holly Springs Pilgrimage.
The annual pilgrimage also includes tours of historic churches and museums.
Even if you don’t visit for the pilgrimage, many historic sites, such as the Yellow Fever Church and Museum, are open year round.
The church-turned-museum honors the victims and heroes of the yellow fever epidemic that swept through Holly Springs in 1878.
The Marshall County Historical Museum is another can’t miss site in Holly Springs.
In addition to a wealth of local history, the museum features an eccentric collection of “more than 100,000 Mississippi oddities and curiosities.”
Like many small towns, Holly Springs has a charming town square that’s home to quaint shops and businesses.
You’ll definitely want to spend some time exploring the one-of-a-kind shops, which include places like Lost River Mercantile.
Housed in a church that dates back to the 1800s, the “wonderfully eclectic” shop carries antiques, gourmet foods, jewelry, clothing, household wares, and more.
Continue your retail fun with a stop in Booker Hardware.
In business since 1837, the charming shop sells general hardware and plumbing supplies as well as antiques and other unique items.
Home to a national forest, Holly Springs is a great place for some outdoor fun.
One of the most popular spots in Holly Springs National Forest is the Chewalla Lake Recreation Area. Centered around a pristine lake with a white sand beach, the recreation area is ideal for swimming, canoeing, and kayaking.
For foodies, the town won’t disappoint.
Visitors to Holly Springs can dine on the “country’s best burger” at Phillip’s Grocery and then wash it down with shake from Tyson Drugs.
A vibrant town oozing with history and character, a visit to Holly Springs is sure to be a delight!
