The Annual Holiday Member Celebration for Thacker Mountain was held on Friday, December 1, at Southside Gallery on the Oxford Square in Oxford, MS. The event highlighted an auction which was held online and in person.
Thacker Mountain Radio Hour is a weekly live radio show in Oxford, Mississippi that features author readings and a wide array of musical performances. It is the only program of its kind – broadcast statewide – that supports and celebrates the state’s artists and musicians. And not only does it reach all corners of the state once a week with the program, it is now broadcasted on public radio stations in other cities around the country.
Mary Margaret Andrews is the current Board president for Thacker Mountain and said there were at least 28 items up for auction.
“This was our annual Christmas party, member fundraiser,” said Andrews. “Our auction this year was amazing and had 28 items. Some of the ones with the larger bids included a progressive dinner with Chef John Currence, owner of City Grocery in Oxford, Miss. We also had a Fender Stratocaster guitar that was autographed by every artist who had performed on Thacker during the Fall 2023 season.”
Andrews said more money was raised this year than last and the event is paramount to the organization’s yearly funding.
“This party generates memberships,” she explained, “because it’s a members-only party, so it’s not only good for funding, it’s also excellent for people to sign up. The Thacker house band, the Yalobushwhackers with the Thacker Horns, performed. It was an amazing time had by all.”
This season the artists and authors have included Mississippi talents: illustrator/author Sarah Frances Hardy: country star Steve Azar and Grammy winner, Cedric Burnside, among many others.
“We had a great season in 2023,” said Andrews. “And we’re looking forward to the Spring season which opens on February 1, 2024 at the Powerhouse in Oxford, Miss.”
