Lots of people know that Mississippi is touted as the birthplace of America’s music. However, not many know how the state came to be regarded as such. Fortunately, we’ve got an incredible museum, the Delta Blues Museum, where you can learn all about the state’s musical heritage. As Mississippi’s oldest music museum, it offers an in-depth look at the state’s soulful past. Take a look:
The Delta Blues Museum is located in Clarksdale, which is fitting since Clarksdale and the surrounding Delta region are known as the land where the blues began.
Though it didn’t move to its current location until 1999, the museum was established back in 1979. This makes it the oldest music museum in Mississippi.
Speaking of its current location, the museum is housed in the historic Clarksdale freight depot which boasts 5,000-square-feet of floor space—every last inch of which is occupied by permanent and traveling exhibits.
Great care has been taken to preserve, interpret, and encourage a deep interest in the story of the blues – and it shows!
As you make your way around the museum, you’ll find a plethora of information on the history and heritage of the blues.
Mississippi’s most influential musicians are also well represented throughout the museum.
Intricately detailed, the exhibits provide a wealth of information through words, music, and pictures. There are also many life-sized exhibits that really bring the state’s musical past to life.
Exhibits and artifacts aren’t all there is to the museum, though.
The Delta Blues Museum hosts a year-round music education program as well as lectures and symposia.
