On Saturday, June 27, at 1:00, community leaders and state officials will join Rosedale Distilling Company founders, Elizabeth and Jack Coleman, to officially open Rosedale Distilling’s distillery and the Perry Martin Club tasting room to the general public. A short drive north of downtown Rosedale, the distilling and bottling room will be available for complimentary tours. Tasting flights of the distillery’s signature Bourbon, Rye, and the just-released, Rosedale Perry Martin Old Original aged whiskey will be available along with bottle sales and specialty cocktails.
“We are excited to finally launch our company surrounded by friends from far and near, local and state community leaders, family, and amazing partners”, said Elizabeth. “Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart; we have worked so hard to make this vision of Jack’s, and also mine, come to fruition. We could not be more thrilled for the public to get a preview of what is to come.”
The Rosedale River Club was the first venue to open recently in downtown Rosedale, with a “First Pour” event making the distillery’s flagship aged Bourbon, Rosedale Red, and Rosedale Rye Straight Whiskey available to the public. Additional tasting rooms in historic buildings, all within walking distance, are scheduled to open over the Summer.
According to Jack Coleman, the company will launch a suite of premium distilled products over the coming year. “We are proud of our head distiller, Cole Miller’s, initial product offerings, and the response from the discriminating consumer has been tremendous. Our tasting rooms will be beautiful on the inside and are a reflection of the standards we strive for in our products. Quality is our priority, and I hope Mississippians will be proud of our venture, one that brings an old industry back to the Mississippi Delta, only this time it’s legal.”
Rosedale Distilling will release the Rosedale Perry Martin Old Original Whiskey on Thursday, June 25, as part of the grand opening celebration weekend. Perry Martin was a legendary bootlegger who lived on a shanty boat along the Mississippi River in Rosedale. He never made a legal drop of whiskey and died at the age of 91 in 1968, before Mississippi lifted prohibition. Martin would age his moonshine in barrels he bought from Coleman’s grandfather’s hardware store, Jackson Brothers Hardware. After aging his whiskey, Martin shipped it by rail to Chicago, hidden under iced-down fish being shipped North from the Rosedale Fish market. Becoming a large supplier for Al Capone, Martin’s whiskey was considered so good it was asked for by name in speakeasies in Chicago and Detroit, and even at parties hosted at the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion, closer to home. Coined “PM” in the early 1940s, the whiskey became a source of pride among Bolivar County citizens, and there are a handful who recall receiving gifts of PM in a jug left at Christmas on their front porch. An ideal citizen and philanthropist, Perry Martin was well-regarded in the Rosedale community.
