The Salvation Army is excited to celebrate National Salvation Army Week in Jackson from May 13 to May 19, 2024. For years, this organization has been dedicated to assisting those in need in our community every day. They support individuals and families experiencing crisis, shelter for the homeless, food and meals for the hungry, and many other crucial services.

In 1954, the United States Congress declared the week of November 18-December 4 as the first National Salvation Army Week, now recognized in May. The observance was created to remind Americans to give generously of themselves. In a speech made during the week, President Dwight D. Eisenhower emphasized the importance of selflessness and giving back to the community.

“Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In times of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

Today, The Salvation Army works in more than 133 countries worldwide. Here in the USA, The Salvation Army is issuing a rallying cry for Americans to “Love Beyond.” The organization’s message is simply that when we love beyond the circumstances of life, we can provide hope and help for millions who need it: love beyond shelter, love beyond hunger, and love beyond disasters. Love Beyond symbolizes the resources and programs that so many people rely on year-round when they turn to The Salvation Army for assistance.

“I am proud to proclaim May 13-19 as The Salvation Army Week in Mississippi,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “The Salvation Army does incredible work across our state and country. When Mississippians need them most, the Salvation Army is there. We’re grateful for their many contributions to Mississippi.” Mayors from Pearl, Clinton, Gluckstadt, and Yazoo City also made proclamations for their cities in honor of the services The Salvation Army Jackson provides for their residents.

“National Salvation Army Week presents a wonderful opportunity for us to let the community know more about the work of The Salvation Army Jackson,” said Major Timothy Delaney. “We not only serve Jackson, but six counties including Copiah, Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Scott, and Yazoo. We want to recognize and celebrate the donors, partners, supporters, and volunteers who make the ministry of the Army possible and invite everyone to join us as we celebrate National Salvation Army Week.”

Events for this special week include a Community Resource Fair for the homeless at Poindexter Park on Wednesday morning with local non-profit, Together We Care. On Thursday, Major Delaney will host Red Shield Tours at 10 am & 2 pm to give an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the programs and services they offer. They’ll also give out treats to local first responders and to students throughout the week. On Saturday, May 18, they’ll offer free Emergency Disaster Training for those interested in helping The Salvation Army during emergencies in the future.

“We are excited to have everyone join us for the Red Shield Tours and Emergency Disaster Training,” Community Relations Director, Ashley Sigrest stated. “It’s a perfect opportunity to see firsthand how we partner with local communities to help those in need.”
