The Mississippi National Guard is celebrating the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps’ 248th birthday July 25, 2023, at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum, Camp Shelby, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Chaplain Corps was established July 29, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized one ordained chaplain, serving at the rank of captain, for each regular regiment of the Continental Army to care for the volunteers fighting for our nation’s independence. More than 200 chaplains served our nation during the Revolutionary War.
Today, the Chaplain Corps boasts a total force of approximately 6,500 personnel approved to provide religious support to the Army around the world. Consisting of more than 2,500 commissioned officer chaplains and approximately 4,000 enlisted religious affairs specialists and support personnel, the Chaplain Corps serves a diverse group of faiths and represents more than 120 individual denominations.
This year’s birthday celebration will include senior leadership and senior chaplains of the Mississippi Army National Guard, as well as support chaplains and religious affairs specialists from throughout the state. All attendees are invited to tour the museum following the Chaplain Corps’ 248th Birthday event.
Media agencies are invited to attend the event. Thank you for your continued support of the Mississippi National Guard. We are Always Ready, Always There.
