The incoming Mississippi superintendent of education, Lance Evans, recently shared his vision and objectives for his tenure, which officially begins in July 2024. Speaking in an online press conference on December 21, Evans expressed his pride in his home state and outlined key initiatives, including enhancing the number of teachers, addressing school choice, and fostering educational equity.

Evans, a native of North Mississippi with a diverse background in education, highlighted the significance of assuming the state superintendent role, calling it “one of the greatest honors and privileges” of his life. With extensive experience in various capacities within school districts, including roles as a teacher, coach, administrator, and superintendent, Evans emphasized his commitment to creating pathways to success for Mississippi’s students.

Believing in the principles of equity and prioritizing students’ best interests, Evans articulated his dedication to fostering an educational environment without dead ends for Mississippi’s students. Until he officially takes office on July 1, 2024, Evans will collaborate closely with interim superintendent Ray Morgigno, engaging in preparations that include working with the state legislature.

Acknowledging the importance of relationships, Evans emphasized that Mississippi is a “relationship state.” He underscored the positive rapport between public education and the Mississippi legislature, highlighting its significance in achieving success for the state. Planning meetings with key legislative figures in January, Evans aims to leverage existing relationships to address critical issues, such as school choice.

Expressing a general stance against the concept of school choice, Evans emphasized his focus on creating outstanding educational opportunities in every school. He aims to ensure that public schools are perceived as the best choice, minimizing the potential for school choice to become a contentious issue. In the event of any school-choice legislation, Evans stressed the need for accountability, asserting that all schools receiving state funds must adhere to the same standards as Mississippi public schools.

Addressing the pressing teacher shortage in Mississippi, Evans outlined plans to bring retired public school teachers back into the classroom and encourage education college graduates to stay within the state for employment. Overall, Evans envisions his role at the state level as a means to support the initiatives and efforts of individual school districts, emphasizing his commitment to moving Mississippi forward and effecting positive change.
