Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, 528 Bloom Street, Jackson, MS 39202, will present the quilting exhibit titled, “Freedom” by Ravin J. Lovett, October 5-November 30, 2023.
Lovett, a local art therapist and quilter, last solo show was in 2009 at Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center. Lovett explained, this exhibition includes 18 new pieces. Her first show was a tribute to her grandmother who taught her to quilt. The young folk artist made her first quilt at age 13, mesmerized by quilting – she began to use the quilting craft as therapy in 2005.
Lovett is a trained art therapist who has worked clients as young as three (3) years and as old as 80 years.
She decided to study art therapy because -art had served as healing force in her life. Quilting helped to grow as a person, and the show’s one word title, “Freedom” sums it all up how, Lovett has come of age working through her issues and it now free to me be herself. Her faith and the craft of quilting allowed her to find her true self.
Lovett’s quilts are a true testimony of how God and art can help you to heal.
