December 2, 2023- At 7:05 P.M. Panola County E-911 Call Center received a 911 hang-up call from 256 Rayburn Road, West of Como, MS Deputy Brian Howell responded.
Deputy Howell encountered a large mass of people at this address who fled in multiple vehicles, many from other counties and out of state. Deputy Howell was able to determine that a dogfight was in progress or in the process of beginning.
Deputy Howell requested backup and, along with responding Deputies, was able to secure the scene.
During the course of this investigation, 29 dogs in various stages of health, many of them bearing scars from previous fights, were seized by the Panola County Sheriff’s Office. The PCSO is working with other entities to ensure these dogs get the best available care.
The PCSO also seized 13 vehicles that were at the scene and whose owners or occupants were participating in the dog fight.
The PSCO also arrested 37-year-old Damien Jay Smoot of Como. Smoot is the homeowner of the residence where this operation was taking place. He is charged with dogfighting, which is a felony.
This investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected to follow.
