On Thursday, March 27, Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons presented Leake County Sheriff Randy Atkinson with a van to be used for inmate litter removal efforts.

“We are proud to collaborate with Sheriff Atkinson by presenting him with this vehicle that will contribute to the removal of trash from our roadways,” said Commissioner Simmons. “I am grateful for the Leake County Sheriff’s Department and Keep Mississippi Beautiful for their commitment to keeping our state beautiful and litter free.”

The program is part of a partnership between the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and local counties that aims to remove litter from state Right-of-Way. Each year, MDOT spends over $3 million picking up litter on state highways.

“One of the most frequent complaints we get is regarding litter. This unit will be utilized to help remove trash from Leake County roadways, but we need the public to do their part as well,” said Simmons. “Please do your part by not throwing trash on our roadways and keep an eye out for any roadside crews working to clear litter.”
