Catfish in the Alley, one of Columbus’ most anticipated cultural events, returns April 11-12 to celebrate the city’s rich African American heritage, deep-rooted blues traditions and world-class Southern cuisine. The two-day event invites visitors and locals to experience the sights, sounds, and flavors that make Columbus a true Southern gem.
The festivities begin Friday, April 11, with a lunchtime event, called “Blues with a Side of Soul.” Keith Johnson and the Big Muddy Band will perform from noon to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Tennessee Williams House Museum. Attendees can enjoy live blues music while savoring a $15 plate lunch of Mississippi farm-raised catfish.
On Saturday, April 12, the celebration moves to historic Catfish Alley, where food vendors, artisans, and a full lineup of live music will fill the street from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Musical lineup for Saturday, April 12:
- Keith and Margie Brown – 10-10:45 a.m.
- The Columbus Community Gospel Choir – 11-11:45 a.m.
- Anissa “Bigg Sexyy” Hampton and the H-Funk Band – Noon-1:15 p.m.
- DK Harrell – 1:30-3 p.m.
More than just a festival, Catfish in the Alley honors the African American entrepreneurs, musicians, and citizens who helped shape Columbus’ cultural landscape. The event takes place in Catfish Alley, once a bustling African American business and social hub where blues music and commerce thrived. The alley earned its name from the aroma of fried catfish that once filled the air, as cafes, barbershops, and other businesses lined the street, forming the backbone of the community.
“Catfish in the Alley is more than a celebration—it’s a way for us to honor the legacy of the African American community in Columbus while sharing our unique history with visitors from near and far,” said Frances Glenn, Columbus tourism director. “Between the incredible lineup of blues and gospel performances, the mouthwatering Southern cuisine and the deep historical significance of the alley, this is an event you don’t want to miss.”
Whether for the food, music or history, Catfish in the Alley promises an unforgettable weekend in Columbus. For more information about Catfish in the Alley, visit www.visitcolumbusms.org or contact the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau at 662-329-1191.
